Abstract:
This study dealt on the role of nutrition in the management of diabetes mellitus. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. Data was collected from fifty (50) respondents randomly selected from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation. Criterions mean score of 2.50 was used as selection criterion.
The findings from the study include that insulin abnormality, overweight or obesity, too much glucose circulating in blood stream, and genetics constitute some of the causes of diabetes mellitus. It was concluded that healthy diets, physical exercise, insulin therapy and oral hypoglycaemic agents constitute some of the nutritional treatment of diabetes as integral part of diabetes management mellitus. It was therefore recommended among others that government should try as much as possible to subsidize the cost of insulin therapy for diabetic patients. This will go a long way towards effective management of diabetes mellitus.
