ABSTRACT

The study explored the role of academic library in improving the reading culture of undergraduate students in Nigerian universities. The study covered full time undergraduate students of the Department of Statistics, University of Benin, Edo State. The objectives of the study were to ascertain the level of reading culture of undergraduate students in Nigerian universities, find out the importance of reading culture to undergraduate students, identify the roles of academic libraries in improving the reading culture of undergraduate students and determine the challenges that undergraduate students face in cultivating a good reading culture. A total of 105 copies of the questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and 100 questionnaires were retrieved and found usable, resulting to a 95% response rate. This response rate is considered adequate for this study as it is more than the universally accepted response rate for most studies which is 67%.
