This essay examined the concept of food security in Nigeria. It considered the right to food under Nigerian and international law and the right to food as a fundamental human right. It also examined the threats and problem of food security in Nigeria. Chapter one provided the background, aims and objectives, problem statement and research methodology. In chapter two, the concept of the right to food as a fundamental human right was discussed. In order to properly appreciate this concept, a description of the nature and requirements of human right was provided. It was concluded that everybody has a right to food and there should be no discrimination in access to economic resources, which unarguably guarantees food security. Chapter three examined the legal and regulatory framework of the concept of food security in Nigeria. The relevant provisions of international and regional instruments were provided and analysed. Some of these instruments includes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol)2003, African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC)1990, African Charter on Human and People's Rights 1981 Convention on the Rights of the Child 1990 etc. Chapter three concluded by recognizing that despite the nonavailability of a specific constitutional provision or statutory enactment providing in detail for the right to food in Nigeria, there is a robust legal and regulatory framework for the right to food, comprising international instruments. Chapter four discussed the threats to food security and right to food in Nigeria. Some of the threats that were listed include terrorism, conflicts and war, gender inequality, corruption, and climate change etc. It concluded that the threats pose a challenge to the right to food and food security in Nigeria hence, they must be addressed.
