SUMMARY

The role of the United Nations in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency has been investigated. Furthermore, the research has given careful consideration to the question of where the religion first emerged. The study's authors also dug into the UN's founding. The findings of this research show that the United Nations, like other organisations, has contributed to the cause of global peace. Terrorism has not been defeated, though, and more work has to be done. After the 9/11 attacks in the United States, the official global war on terrorism began. Following these assaults, the United States government, the United Nations, and any other actors that assist terrorist organisations declared war on all of them. Many innocent people have been killed as a direct consequence of the disorganised manner this war has been waged since 9/11. To protect civilians and injured combatants, or in the event of a ceasefire or surrender, international humanitarian law sets fundamental guidelines for how wars are fought. Terrorist organisations have shown that they can threaten global security on a scale previously only seen in wars between states. With non-state actors being able to have the same effect on international stability as states, it is time for a shift in policy toward these groups.
