RESOURCE AVAILABILITY AND ITS IMPACT ON STUDENTS’ LEARNING OUTCOME IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

The study is on resource availability and its impact on students learning outcome in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. To carry out this study, four research questions were raised which are; Are resources available for teaching and learning in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State? To what extent are available resources utilized in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State? What is the impact of resources on students’ learning outcome in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State? What are the challenges associated with resource availability in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. The study adopted descriptive research design and the population of the respondents comprises of 100 students from all the 13 public secondary school, who were randomly selected from Egor Local Government. The instrument used to gather information was a structured questionnaire which have items options of “Available” and “Not Available. “Always”, “Sometimes”, “Rarely” and “Never” and a 4-point Likert scale of “Strongly Agree”, “Agree”, “Disagree” and “Strongly Disagree. Data was analysed using simple percentage, frequency counts, mean and standard deviation. Findings revealed that that there are available resources like textbooks, workbook, blackboard, interactive board, computer, multi media, laboratory. While posters and slide are not unavailable. It was observed that there are challenges associated with resources availability in secondary schools like maintenance, preservation, procurement of up to date resources and improvisation of resources. Recommendations were made, that teachers and school authority should always utilize available resources for the teaching and learning of students, school authority should improvised resources materials and government/ school authority should provide funds for maintenance and preservation of resource materials.
