ABSTRACT
This research work canvassed for the importance of renewable energy in the achievement of sustainable development in Nigeria. It posits that the energy mix in Nigeria should consist more of renewable energy as this will aid sustainable development in Nigeria. Nigeria being a developing Country needs sustainable development for better development and the closest and easiest way for achievement is through renewable energy. This research work looked into the uses and importance of energy to humans and the world at large and how fossil fuel has been and is still the major source of energy production in Nigeria, it went on to examine the views and opinions of various authors and writers as regarding renewable energy as a source of sustainable development in Nigeria; stating how some of the scholars failed to show that in the achievement of sustainable development, renewable energy has a major role to play; which is what the research work seeks to achieve. This work also examined the concept of sustainable development, how it came to be, the benefits, and the challenges facing its achievement. It further examined renewable energy, its viability in relation to enhancing sustainable development and the barriers to it’s development in Nigeria. This research also examines the existing policies in Nigeria on renewable energy and the success of having a legislative framework in Germany. It finally proffered recommendations and suggestions on how sustainable development can be achieved in Nigeria through renewable energy development.
