ABSTRACT

Produced water is a by-product of the production of oil and gas Hydrocarbon from underground oil reservoirs due to its contact with crude oil during the extraction of oil from well, it is highly contaminated with crude oil which results in its high Hydrocarbon content, improper discharge of these water overtime has been uneconomical resulting in several unfavorable conditions. Hydrocarbon contamination in the environment is a very serious problem whether it comes from petroleum, pesticides or other toxic organic matter. Environmental pollution caused by petroleum is of great concern because petroleum hydrocarbons are toxic to all forms of life (Abha 2012) This study was focused on evaluating the efficiency of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in Phytoremediation of hydrocarbon content in sample of produced water, also to determine the physiochemical properties of the sample. The major index used in monitoring the phytoremediation capacity of the aquatic plant water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) was the absorbance rate and the total hydrocarbon content concentration, using UV-VS Spectrophotometer. Subsequent values obtained were 28.7456mg/l, 0.391 absorbance rate; 14.41576mg/l, 0.437 absorbance rate; 3.82408mg/l, 0.471 absorbance rate; 1.95496mg/l, 0.477 absorbance rate; 0.70888mg/l, 0.481 absorbance rate, respectively.
