ABSTRACT
The experiment was carried out to remediate crude oil contaminated soil using organic and inorganic materials. The experiment was conducted in soil science screen house, faculty of Agriculture, university of Benin, Benin city ,Edo state. The soil sample was contaminated with crude oil and weighed into four container labelled A, B, C and D. The soil was amended with the application of 35g/kg cow dung, 35g/kg rumen waste, 35g/kg composite mixture of cow dung leaving sample D without amendment which serve as control. The experiment was carried out for nine weeks. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with four treatment replicated three times with two sub division; treated and untreated soil, the soil was treated with dichloromethane, distilled water, aqua regia and the organic amendment while untreated soil have organic amendment with no treatment. The result shows that there was a decrease in the mean value of the following parameters across week three to week nine; total hydrocarbon(67.87 -49.68mg/kg) for untreated soil,( 68.98- 45.52mg/kg) for treated soil, soil pH(5.63 -5.76) for untreated soil,(5.5 - 5.4) for treated soil, total nitrogen (0.78 -0.71g/kg) for untreated soil, (0.75 -0.72g/kg) for treated soil, magnesium( 0.30 - 0.33cmol/kg) for untreated soil,(0.26 -0.25cmol/kg)for treated soil, available phosphorus (8.45 - 7.54mg/kg) for untreated soils, 8.55 -8.33mg/kg),sand (856.83 - 844g/kg) for untreated soil, sand content increased for treated soil(856.17 -863.75g/kg), clay (70.90 -71.3g/kg) for untreated soils,(68.4 -65.67g/kg)for treated soil and silt content (72.20 -69.5g/kg)for untreated soil,(75.4 - 72.25g/kg) for treated soil.It was observed from the total hyrocarbon content that composite xture of cow dung and rumen waste remediated the soil most.
