ABSTRACT

The aim of this work is to examine religious fanaticism and it's negative influence on the citizens of Nigeria; Dogmas, creed, and theologies are invented by the mind. It is the nature of the mind to make sense out of every experience, because some of these doctrines are restrictive while some are manipulative. In a world of technological and scientific enlightenment, it has become paramount to consider what relevance religion and certain religious cultural practices may have to the welfare of the state. While religion may be said to provide some psychological benefits to individuals and religious institutions may provide valuable charitable services, there are significant costs that are incurred as a result of Religion. This research attempt to analyze the meaning of religion, it's positive and negative effect to human development in the state, this research was carried out by first, looking at the background, significant, purpose of religion. The methods used were hermeneutics, critical methods, and analysis. We examine the concept of religion by different scholars, most especially Karl Marx's concept of religion which is the main purpose for my research work. We also discussed on the panacea to some of the principles of faith and ideologies held by some religious fanatics that has led to estrangement on the part of the people and control by the leaders and finally a conclusion was drawn.
