ABSTSRACT
Theatre is a transient art and this makes the documentation of several significant theatrical moments in performance impossible. The development of social media and other related internet platforms, however, offer a solution to the challenges of documenting theatre productions. This study investigated the relevance of social media platforms as means of documenting theatrical performances and explored the ways that theatre practitioners can use social media to store and retrieve productions. The study’s focus was the Uniben Theatre.
The study deployed the survey methodology for the collection of primary data and the questionnaire instrument was used to elicit responses from students of Theatre Arts Department of the University of Benin. To this end, 100 students drawn from across the four levels of the Department were sampled and results showed among other things that, two major ways the advent of social media platforms have impacted on theatre practice from the Uniben Theatre perspective are in the areas of publicity and documentation.
Among other things, the study recommended that Theatre makers should be increasingly encouraged to leverage the possibilities offered by social media platforms to increase the visibility, accessibility and re-trievability of their productions. This way, the problem of lost records of important productions would be significantly reduced
