ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate the relationship of physical education teaching to the development of sport in Edo state sitting rural areas (implication for counseling). In order to carry out this task, three research questions were raised and three hypotheses were formulated. The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of this study comprised three hundred and six (318) PE teachers in 318 junior secondary schools in eighteen local government areas in Edo state. The data was collected using simple random technique and a sample size of ninety (90) PE teachers from secondary schools and local government education board.
The researcher instrument used for the study was a self-structured questionnaire, the validity of the instrument was subjected to scrutiny and the test-retest reliability technique was used to ascertain its reliability. The correlation coefficient computed was 0.79 indicating that the instrument was reliable. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentages and mean, while Pearson Correlation statistics was used to test the hypothesis. The study revealed that there is significant relationship between teaching skills of sports/games by Physical Education teachers and the development of sports in secondary school of Edo State.. Further findings also revealed there is significant relationship between sports competition organised and funds mobilized or raised by Physical Education teachers and the development of sports in Edo State.. Finally, the study also revealed that there is of significant relationship between exposure of Physical Education teachers to workshops, conferences and seminars and the development of sports in Edo State.A
