ABSTRACT

This research work examined the relationship between teachers’ job satisfaction and students’ academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study specifically sought to investigate the relationship between teachers’ reward system, teachers’ training and development of teachers as well as teachers’ work situation and students’ academic performance. Three research questions raised were what is the relationship between teachers’ reward system and students’ academic performance?; what is the relationship between training and development and students’ academic performance?; what is the relationship between teachers’ work situation and students’ academic performance? In doing so, the study adopted a correlational research design. The population comprised all teachers in senior secondary schools in Oredo L.G.A of Edo State while the sample comprised of 99 teachers representing 25% of total population of teachers and were selected through convenience sampling. The instrument which was a closed-ended questionnaire was structured in a likert-scale and was validated by experts in the field of Education. The reliability coefficient of 0.72 was obtained which established that the instrument was reliable. The instrument was administered and filled questionnaire were retrieved and analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Findings revealed that there was a significant relationship between teachers’ reward system and students’ academic performance, there was a significant relationship between training/development and students’ academic performance, there was a significant relationship between work situation and students’ academic performance. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the state Government and post primary schools services commission should create ample opportunity for various staff development programmes and that promotions should be given to teachers as at when due. All teachers' entitlement and allowances should be given them, as at when due.
