ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to investigate the leadership styles adopted by principal in Benin City. It is equally concerned with determining which style are more effectively used by principal to yield the best result also to find out: If there is a relationship between leadership styles and management effectiveness of principal in public secondary Benin City, if there is a relationship between leadership styles and management effectiveness of principals based on sex of principals, if there is a relationship between leadership styles and might effectiveness of principals based on size of school. Four (4) hypotheses were formulated from four (4) research question which were raised to guide the study. The sample population was selected purposively by selecting fifteen (15) teachers from one public secondary school in each of the four LGA in Benin City of Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo and Outa North East. The descriptive survey research method was employed and person correlation was used to analyses the data.
The following were the finding of the study of 95% confidence level, it observed that there is no significant relationship between leadership style and might effectiveness of principal in public sec school in Benin City, there is a significant difference in the relationship between leadership style and might effectiveness of principal in public sec school based on their sexes, there is no significant differences in the relationship between leadership style and management effectiveness of principal in public secondary school based on the type of school, there is a significant differences in the relationship between leadership style and management effectiveness of principal in public secondary school base on the school size.
Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that principal leadership styles do not account for management effectiveness of principal in public secondary school in Benin City. The recommendations of the study were that principals should understand which leadership styles elicit management effectiveness; Education boards, school administrators and policy makers should educate teachers on the various leadership styles.
