RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIMENSIONS OF JOB SATISFACTION AND LEVEL OF ABSENTEEISM

ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between job satisfaction and the level of absenteeism of teachers in private secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Five research questions and five hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The study adopted a Correlational research design. The population of the study consisted of 5,092 teachers in private junior secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area with a sample of 254 students which were randomly selected. The instrument used for the study was a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated by three experts and then administered on 30 respondents to test for its reliability. The Cronbach alpha statistics was used in determining the reliability of the instrument and the value obtained was 0.862 which implied that the instrument was reliable. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC) and linear regression were used for the analysis of data. The findings of the study showed that there is a significant relationship between salaries and level of absenteeism of teachers in private secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State; there was a significant relationship between availability of learning materials and level of absenteeism of teachers in private secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State; there was a significant relationship between teachers’ promotions and level of absenteeism of teachers in private secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State; there was a significant relationship between work stress and level of absenteeism of teachers in private secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State; and there was a significant relationship between dimensions of job satisfaction and level of absenteeism of teachers in private secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that Proprietors of schools should look into the salaries and allowances of teacher with a view to reviewing and increasing it, since the economic situation in the country is not static and favourable. This will help to increase teachers’ satisfaction on their job.
