ABSTRACT

This study focuses on extracting Bioactive Compounds (BCs) from soursop (Annona muricata) peels to explore their potential health benefits. The research places its primary focus on optimizing the extraction process using ethanol and ethyl acetate as solvents through reflux extraction technique. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was employed to optimize parameters such as temperature (°C), stirring speed (rpm), and extraction time (min), resulting in optimal conditions of 74.386°C, 2039.71 rpm, and 99.509 min, respectively. These conditions were found to maximize BCs extraction. Key BCs like alkaloids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds were identified. Total phenolic content (TPC), Total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity of the extract were assessed, indicating its potential health-promoting properties. FTIR spectrum obtained from the extracts showed bands representing functional groups of important bioactive compounds GC-MS analysis identified 17 compounds in the peels extract. These techniques provided valuable insights into the chemical composition and structural properties of the soursop peels. This study highlights the importance of optimizing extraction parameters and showcases the bioactive potential of agricultural waste materials like soursop peels. By doing so, it promotes sustainability and adds value to agricultural by-products, emphasizing the significance of utilizing such resources effectively.
