ABSTRACT
This project investigated the consumption of junk foods among university students in University of Benin. Five (5) research questions were raised for the study. The study adopted survey research design.
The study adopted survey research design. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire; it was built around the research question by the researcher and validated by the researcher’s supervisor. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, mean and standard deviation.
The major findings of the study are as follows: the adduced reasons for consumption of junk foods among students in University of Benin are: civilization is making the consumption of junk foods popular, food vendors make the junk foods available to us in our hostels they love eating junk foods because of the taste, they eat junk food because they don’t have the time to cook. consumption of junk foods among students in University of Benin has adverse effect on students health. the level of students’ awareness of the effect of consumption of junk foods among students in University of Benin is very high.. the reasons presented for consumption of junk foods differ based on gender and the reasons presented for consumption of junk foods do not differ based on hall of residence. Based on the findings, the following recommendations are made: Students should be counseled on having a good diet irrespective of any reasons for doing junk amongst others.
