ABSTRACT

The place of newspaper to communicate political process is no longer in doubt. To advance the conversation and mobilize political supports, newspaper has become a critical political tool for campaign planners.. In light of this, this study examined the Readers Perception of the Vanguard and Nigeria Observer Coverage of 2019 Presidential Election in Nigeria. This study is anchored on the theoretical frameworks of technological determinism and social judgment theory which suggest that exposure to political campaigns encourages people to “assimilate” or equate their feelings about related target attitudes. Survey method was adopted for the study with a purposive sampling. The data generated were analyzed using frequency distribution and simple percentage. The findings indicate that the political campaigns through the newspaper had significant effect on the electorates’ decision-making and participation in Nigerian elections. The study therefore recommends the embracing of newspaper as a credible medium for successive political campaigns that grant the electorates the opportunity to know the mandate of the political candidates.
