ABSTRACT

This study delved into the evolution of skit making in Nigerian universities catalyzed by social media. Conducting interviews with campus skit creators, we explored the transformative impact of platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Previously confined to campus stages, skit making now enjoys a global digital prviewers. Affordable smartphones and internet access played pivotal roles, breaking entry barriers. Skit makers adeptly embraced Instagram and TikTok’s brief video formats. Social media facilitated interactive engagements, enhancing the bond between creators and viewers. This research uncovered the professionalization of skit making. Established creators collaborated with brands, yet financial hurdles persisted for newcomers. The challenge lay in building substantial audiences for revenue, a feat complicated by avoiding controversy in light of “Cancel Culture,” focusing on humor instead. In essence, social media propelled Nigerian university skit making onto a worldwide stage. Despite challenges, skit makers thrived, fostering global connections. The future holds promises of further innovations, transforming the landscape of digital entertainment.
