ABSTRACT
Studies have proven that radio is one of the most popular tools of communication and transmission. Radio dramas which are dramatized purely acoustic performances of societal issues are means through which awareness of happenings is transmitted. Most radio dramas are staged according to what is experienced in the society. It has been observed that the use of radio dramas to address certain societal ills have waned considerably with the advent of social media which seems to have taken the attention of the public off listening to radio dramas. Radio which is an accessible medium of communication has been known to effect social changes beneficial to a community or country which indicates that it is a tool for national development. Anchored on the Development Media Theory, the survey design was employed with the aid of a 13-item questionnaire. The sample constituted randomly selected radio listeners within the Benin metropolis. Data obtained were analysed and presented with the aid of frequency Tables and Simple percentage. The study found out that in discussing how radio dramas can be used as a tool for social change, it will further address some issues that would bring about development and correct perceived ills in the society. The paper therefore recommends that for development to take place in a community, media practitioners should lay more emphasis on the use of radio drama to create awareness on societal happenings and equally focus on issues that foster national unity and understanding to bring about positive change in the society, Radio Stations should ensure that they produce radio drama programmes which will deliberately be targeted at the people for social change, and that Government should reduce her overbearing influence on existing commercial and public radio stations in Nigeria in order for them to give the desired attention to social issues in terms of highlighting the developmental needs of the people for social change.
