ABSTRACT
Suicide is an intentional ‘act’ of killing oneself (Igbu onwe). It’s the deliberate act of taking owns life voluntarily. This research work examines the concepts of suicide in African worldview: Nnobi as a case study. The aim of this research is to critically analyze the concept of suicide from the Nnobi People in the Igbo ethnic group and to understand the religious implications of suicide surrounding it according to their customs and to examine the factors that lead to suicide. The motive of this research is to vividly analyse on the concept of (Ikpu Aru) the cleansing or purification ritual and examining the concept of Suicide from the general Igbo Concept. This research work find out that suicide is an abomination which attracts punishment from the spirit being. It also found out that secrecy is an important process in the cleansing ritual and also (Nwa nshi) the priest performing the ritual will not eat food cooked with oil before coming to perform the ritual and that suicide is a multifactor act. The methodology used for this research is historical and descriptive analysis. With this Method am able to get the needed information via interviews and books, journals and articles and these data is analyzed in a historiographical aspect. This research recommends that there should be a general awareness program on mental health, and the need for the government and the masses to collaborate in tackling the factors that leads to suicide.
