ABSTRACT

Tetracyclines constitute a category of broad-spectrum antibiotics utilized in the treatment and control of various infectious ailments. The use of Tetracycline in Veterinary medicine, leads to the rising global issue of tetracycline resistance. This study evaluated the quality and content in some selected brands available in Benin City through a series of assessments, including visual inspection, and dissolution tests. The goal was to ensure that these products met established pharmacopeial standards for safety and efficacy.

Standard method for visual (WHO Visual Tool) and dissolution test (United States Pharmacopeia) was used. In addition, a modified method of spectrophotometry of Ahmed et. al was used, in the quantitative analysis of the different brands, using wavelength absorbance was taken at 362nm and distilled water as solvent. The visual assessment showed that 80% of the tetracycline brands products met the quality standards. The dissolution rates at of the different tetracycline 20. 40. 60 mins where between the ranges of 91%-99%, The Spectrophotometric method showed that the active ingredient obtained was between the standard range (USP).

Visual inspection of the different brands of tetracycline samples showed that 80% 0f the brands products met the standard. All the brands achieved over 80% dissolution within 60 minutes and pharmacopoeia standards for quantity, potency, and purity, including T2 and T7,. Though T2 and T7 are safe for use, they may become substandard before expiration. This study emphasizes the importance of quality monitoring, as it ensures the safety and efficacy of antibiotics.
