ABSTRACT
The aim of this thesis is to assess the availability of cattle rumen content and cattle rumen fluid for energy generation in Benin city, Nigeria. I conducted the study in three selected abattoirs of Egor local government area known as Cattle market 1, Cattle market 2 and Useh market for a period of five weeks from July 8th,15th and 21st 2023 to August 12th,19th and 22th 2023, at the abattoirs respectively. The quantity of Cattle Rumen Content (CRC) and Cattle Rumen Fluid (CRF) was recorded based on the actual number of slaughtered cattle on the operating days within the five weeks at each abattoir. The study of five weeks showed that the three selected abattoirs generated a total of 1281.27kg (1.28127metic tonne) of cattle rumen content and 496.5kg (0.4965 metric tonne) of cattle rumen fluid which could contribute to the estimated amount of 99,581.303 metric tonne of cattle rumen content generated in Nigeria and the 37.78 MJ/m3 energy value obtained. The study concluded that the Cattle Rumen Content and Cattle Rumen fluid are available in Egor Local Government area of Benin city and the energy potential, as a viable feedstock and inoculum in biogas production thereby promoting sustainable energy practices in Benin City, Nigeria.
