ABSTRACT
Sleep is an necessity for life and healthy living in a human being, it is also important in physical and mental health. In same line Mental health is a crucial part of health which is most times neglected especially in under developed countries. Affectation of ones mental health invariably affects ones academic performance, capacity of learning, and neural-behavioral functions. Students are a population susceptible to these negative aspects of life as they go through factors that can affect their mental health. This study aimed to determine the sleep quality, workload and students’ mental health in University of Benin,Benin City, Edo State.
Participants (158 males, 442 females) in the CSS were aged 21.18 ±2.1 years (range of 17-26 years. A significant proportion (57.8%) of the participants reported as having poor sleep quality. More than half of the participants (70.3%) had a moderate to severe psychological distress,3.5% reported had very severe psychological distress. There was a significant relationship between participants’ academic workload and mental health (p< 0.005). There was a significant relationship between participants’ sleep and mental health (p<0.05). There was also a significant relationship between participants’ academic workload and sleep There was no significant association between different levels and the sleep quality, workload but a significant association between different levels and mental health. at(p = 0.222,0.147,0.014) respectively. There was no significant difference in knowledge of IPE between male and female participants (Mann–Whitney U =9780.0; p = 0.411) but there was a significant difference in perception of IPE between male and female participants (Mann–Whitney U =8558.5; p = 0.011).There was no significant relationship with the different faculties and sleep quality but there a significant relationship with mental health and workload when the faculties are varied.
