ABSTRACT

Urban catchments in rainy climates are commonly exposed to flood threats. In lowland areas urban flooding is often associated with an inadequate drainage system, in most cases due to inadequate inlet capacity. This study seeks to examine the drainage system and the rate of flooding in Uselu-Lagos Road, Benin City, Edo state.

A self-structured questionnaire was employed in the research survey in order to obtain the information that aided the research, a total number of 204 questionnaires were distributed and 200 was retrieved. The pearson correlation method was used to validate the hypothesis. Various data collection techniques that were used include questionnaires, photographs, observation and interviews.

The results indicated that Uselu-Lagos road drainage system does not adequately drain the runoffs. As a result, the surrounding environment is greatly affected as exemplified by runoffs damaging some sections of the Road, blockage of the road, loss of life and property. Poor maintenance is the major challenge and also the depositing of solid wastes in the drainage system. The study recommends that drainage facilities should be improved through maintenance and sensitization of people on the effect of disposing debris in the drainage.
