ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to comprehensively assess the feasibility and effectiveness of biosand filtration in the purification of industrial wastewater for safe effluent discharge. The study aims to provide insights into potential solutions for efficient and environmental friendly discharge of industrial wastewater, identifying reuse opportunities, and understanding treatment requirements. The methodology employed in this study involves the evaluation of industrial wastewater quality through the identification of potential reuse opportunities and treatment requirements. Wastewater samples were collected from a palm oil milling company, and physico-chemical and microbial assessments were conducted on the collected samples. Technological options for wastewater treatment and recycling were investigated, taking into account cost, energy efficiency, and adaptability to different industrial processes. A recycling system was designed based on initial physico-chemical findings, integrating physio-chemical processes and bio-filtration technology. Follow-up analysis of the recycled water was performed by comparing outcomes with established standards to evaluate the impact of the recycling procedure. The results of the study indicate that the bio-filtration process demonstrated an average reduction efficiency of 85.46% for various parameters, highlighting its efficiency in treating industrial wastewater. The effluent was found to be suitable for non-consumptive purposes, meeting standards set by regulatory bodies.The bio-sand filtration system having a flowrate of 0.0135m3 /hr, when integrated with physico-chemical processes, shows promising results in improving water quality and meeting regulatory standards for wastewater discharge.. Overall, this study contributes to sustainable water management practices in industrial settings, addressing environmental concerns and enhancing operational efficiency
