ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the purification of industrial wastewater using biosand filtration technology, specifically focusing on the integration of bio-sand filtration with physico-chemical processes. The primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of bio-sand filtration methods in improving water quality, removing contaminants, and facilitating the safe reuse of treated wastewater. By conducting comprehensive physicochemical and microbial analyses on industrial wastewater samples, this research aims to provide insights into the potential of bio-sand filtration technology for sustainable industrial wastewater management. The methodology employed in this study involves the collection of industrial wastewater samples from a fish farm effluent discharge for detailed physico-chemical and microbial analysis. The samples are subjected to bio-sand filtration treatment, coupled with physicochemical processes, to evaluate the system's efficiency in removing pollutants and enhancing water quality. Key parameters such as COD, BOD, suspended solids, and microbial content are monitored before and after treatment to assess the performance of the bio-filtration system in purifying industrial wastewater. The results of the study demonstrate the efficacy of bio-sand filtration technology in significantly reducing contaminants in industrial wastewater, as evidenced by the substantial removal of COD, BOD, and suspended solids, with removal efficiency of 50%, 73.33% and 83.33% respectively. The bio-sand filtration system having a flowrate of 0.0135m3 /hr, when integrated with physico-chemical processes, shows promising results in improving water quality and meeting regulatory standards for wastewater discharge. The study underscores the significance of bio-filtration technology in promoting environmentally responsible industrial practices and ensuring the safe discharge.
