ABSTRACT
This study was to determine the public perception of the use of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as a tool for campaign against abnormal use of drugs among Benson Idahosa University students. Survey research design was adopted with the questionnaire used as the research instrument for data gathering. One hundred and fifty questionnaires were distributed and one hundred and forty - five were retrieved from the respondents from five faculties participated in the research study. Results showed that 100 respondents representing 69% were aware about the television awareness campaign against abnormal use of drugs. The respondents (95.9%) agreed that they were educated, enlightened and informed by the specific television awareness campaign programmes such as NAFDAC and Your Health about abnormal use of drugs and 58.8% agreed that the campaigns affected their attitude/mindset in a positive way. Societal / peer pressure is the major factor that encourage university students to engage in abnormal use of drugs, followed by frustration/rebellion and anxiety/lack of confidence. One hundred and seventeen (117) respondents, representing 80.4% believed that cigarette is the most commonly abused drug by Benson Idahosa University students, followed by alcohol herbal bitters, alcohol and marijuana. Based on these findings, NAFDAC and your Health campaign programme against abnormal drug use has proven to be a vital tool and has been effective in the fight against abnormal drug use among Benson Idahosa University students. Recommendations included that NTA should intensify their publicity and commitment to drug abuse by being more creative in their content and produce more campaign programmes that will influence youths positively and the university management should carry out routine tracking of drug sellers and distributors around the school environment and deploy suitable control mechanisms to combat abnormal use of drugs by the students.
