ABSTRACT

This research work was geared towards accessing the perception of the E-voting option in the fight against electoral malpractices in Nigeria with particular reference to the eligible voters in Edo State. It is largely accepted that electoral malpractices are major drawback in the sustainability of democracy in any democratic country – Nigeria inclusive. Democracy to a large extent is determined by the electoral process in the country. The voting process in Nigeria has been characterized by a number of malpractices which includes ballot bus snatching, Election Day violence and intimidation of voters, election rigging, and financial inducement of voters and so on. It is against this backdrop that this research work examined the challenges of the traditional paper ballot system and the prospects of the e-voting option in the fight against electoral malpractices in Nigeria. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. This research found that e-voting will help to cure the challenge of voter apathy thereby reviving the confidence of the electorate on the voting process and also to reduce if not eliminate ballot bus snatching, violence, and other forms of electoral malpractices. This research concluded that e-voting technology can be a viable alternative capable of turning around the voting process of Nigeria’s democracy. In this respect, the research recommends that the federal government of Nigeria should invest more in technology to enable e-voting strive.
