ABSTRACT
The media are indispensable in the practice of democracy in any country. Every ideal democratic country as one its major activities conduct elections in all tiers of government. This research project investigated the public perception of Nigerian television coverage of presidential election debates spanning the period from May 2015 to May 2023. Presidential election debates serve as crucial platforms for political discourse, enabling citizens to evaluate and make informed choices about the candidates vying for the highest office in the country. However, the quality and impact of television coverage of these debates can significantly influence public perception and voter behaviour. The study employed the Hypodermic needle theory and the Spiral of Silence theory. It also utilized a descriptive research design using quantitative research approach. The sample size of 384 was drawn from the population of about Four hundred and ninety thousand, six hundred in Oredo Local Government area. Google forms was used to collect data. MS Excel worksheet was used to analyze collected data while descriptive statistical tools such as simple percentages and tables were used for analysis of the data. This study revealed that the respondents use the television medium to get news concerning the presidential election debates in Nigeria. This study also revealed that the television medium carried out its role by disseminating information about the presidential candidates that made the respondents form an opinion about the candidates. The findings of this study also showed that the demographic variables of the presidential candidates had a large influence on the perception of the respondents towards these candidates. This study suggests the need for media organizations to prioritize objectivity, balance, and professionalism in their coverage, ensuring that they provide substantive analysis and context to help viewers make informed judgments. It also suggests that efforts should be made to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of the debates, ensuring that they reach a wider audience and reflect the diversity of Nigerian society. Also, it is recommended that media literacy initiatives should be implemented to empower citizens in critically evaluating and interpreting televised debates, enabling them to separate facts from misinformation and form independent opinions. Lastly, it is recommended that Collaborative efforts between media organizations, civil society, and educational institutions can contribute to enhancing media literacy among the populace.
