ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research work is to examine the psychological and social challenges confronting parents of children with special needs in Benin City and the need for counselling. Survey research design was adopted for the research study and a total of 120 questionnaires were administered to parents of children with special needs in Benin City by adopting a total population sampling technique. Findings have revealed that parents of children with special needs in Benin City are confronted with psychological and social challenges such as stigma, trauma, sadness, stress, depression, suicidal thoughts, worries of educating their children, accessing health, care expertise, finance, time management, accessing support, inadequate facilities, job disruption, personal development, and isolation and that to a great extent, the parents of children with special needs, need counselling to remedy the psychological and social challenges they are faced with regarding their children.
