ABSTRACT

This study determined the mineral and proximate analysis of the root bark of Tetracarpidium conophorum. The root was collected from its natural habitat at Ova community, Egor Local Government Area, Edo State and prepared for mineral and proximate analysis using flame emission spectrometry (FES), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and Standard methods. Calcium, manganese, copper and zinc were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry, while sodium and potassium were identified using flame emission spectrometry. The proximate composition followed the order; crude fibre (33.87%) > crude protein (23.12%) > carbohydrate (14.14%) > ash content (11.285) > moisture content (11.22%) > fat (6.10%). While the results of the mineral or elemental analysis followed the order; calcium (29.40mg/kg) > potassium (14.02mg/kg) > Sodium (1.42mg/kg) > manganese (0.28mg/kg) > zinc (0.110mg/kg) > copper (0.002mg/kg). These findings show that the root bark of Tetracarpidium conophorum is very rich in proximate constituents and essential elements especially calcium, this further shows that the root bark of this plants will be very helpful in the treatment of bones.
