ABSTRACT
Scent leaf (Ocimum gratissimum ) is a tree basil and small shrub commonly known as “tea bush” or “fever plant.” It is a multipurpose plant with nutritional, medicinal and industrial benefits. This study was conducted to determine the proximate composition and amino acid profile of scent leaf meal and bagasse. The proximate composition of the leaf meal obtained from crude protein, ether extract and nitrogen free extract was significantly higher than those of the leaf bagasse. However, the proximate composition of the leaf bagasse such as dry matter, crude fibre, and ash were significantly higher than those of leaf meal. The total essential amino acid in scent leaf meal and bagasse was 28.00 and 22.20g/100g respectively. The total amino acid in leaf meal was 61.39g/100g and that in leaf bagasse was 49.50g/100g. The results indicate that scent leaf meal and bagasse are rich in essential amino acids and could serve as a good source of protein. Therefore, 3 scent leaf bagasse can be used as food/feed supplements because animal proteins are expensive.
