ABSTRACT
Picralima nitida a medicinal plant grown abundantly in tropical countries and it is used traditionally in the treatment of aliments. This study is aimed at determining the proximate composition, (moisture content, ash content, ether extract, crude fiber, crude protein and nitrogen free extract), the acute toxicity study amd the chemical composition of methanol seed extract of Picralima nitida. All experiment was carried out using standard method. The seed extract of Picralima nitida were successfully prepared by maceration using methanol as the solvent with a percentage yield of 6.5%. the study show that the seed contains moisture content 5.50%, ash content 6.00%, ether extract 14.00%, crude protein 19.47%, crude fiber 6.00% and nitrogen free extract 49.04%. The acute toxicity study show the 0% mortality at 200mg/kg and 100% mortality at the dose of 400mg/kg and 800mg/kg with some adverse effect like vomiting, writhing, restlessness and Salivation. The Gc-ms analysis revealed the presence of 31 compounds some of which are responsible for the high toxicity, which causes the death of the mice. Some of these toxic compounds are; pentanal, pyridine-3-ethyl and hexane, 1-fluoro. This means that the seed extract is very toxic.
