Generally, there are a plethora of legislations in Nigeria that protects the rights of the girl child and women, however majority of these legislations are either not properly enforced for a plethora of reasons or there is poor enlightenment about the necessity and importance of enforcing these rights. Furthermore there exist several customs and traditional practices that promotes attitudes and behavior that are inimical to the rights and wellbeing of the girl child. The study scrutinizes the efficacy of the legal provisions against the violation of the human right of women taking into account the vulnerability of the female gender to various forms of discrimination in a chauvinistic society as Nigeria. The study further discussed the history, form and challenges of the existing legal framework for protecting the women’s right in Nigeria. The study utilized the doctrinal research method, accessing information from the primary and secondary sources relevant to the subject matter and involves references from Legislations, text book, Journal Articles and online materials. The findings of this study clearly explicates that the legal provision for the protection of women’s right in Nigeria is greatly influenced by the international human right provisions. However the efficiency of these legislations for the protection of women right is also limited to the provision of customary laws in the country which may not be in line with international standards.
