PROMBLEM FACING THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF COMPUTER SCIENCE IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA.

ABSTRACT

 This study was carried out to identify the problem Facing the Teaching and Learning of Computer Science in Oredo local Government Area. Four research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study. A random sampling technique was used in selection of 200 Computer Science Students from JSS1 to JSS3 which are drawn from 5 different secondary schools. The data were collected with questionnaire instrument and analyzed using simple percentage.

The result revealed that; the students in the schools of study have a positive attitude towards the learning of computer science, hence they learn better, the teaching methods of their computer science teachers have greatly affected their learning outcomes, a student’s development depends on the quantity of well-qualified teachers and the schools had well-qualified teachers, the use of relevant instructional materials for teaching and learning computer science brings about better academic performance and understanding of lesson content, student’s high-quality academic performance and outcomes in computer science are connected to the nature of the learning environment, also the learning environment in the schools of study is not conducive to the teaching and learning of computer science .

 Based on the results, students at this level should be positively orientated towards the need to have more positive attitudes towards ICT irrespective of gender, background and other characteristics, schools’ managements should ensure effective and efficient utilization of instructional materials available to them, teachers with professional qualification(s) at higher level should teach computer science in the secondary schools, more computers should be provided to schools for effective delivery in the teaching of computer science in secondary schools, government should strengthen the use of Computer along with the teaching of ICT at this level and the relevant re-training of teachers on the use be instituted
