ABSTRACT

The consumption of animal protein in Nigeria has been inadequate due to the unsuitable growth resource and relative decline compared to the steady growth in human population. The high demand for fish which cannot be met by local production and import has pushed the market price of catfish beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians, coupled with the taste for fresh fish consumption. Hence this study was conducted to assess the profitability of catfish production in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the socioeconomic characteristics of catfish farmers in the study area; identify the methods of catfish production in the study area; determine the cost and return accrued to catfish farming in the study area; identify the constraints encountered by catfish farmers in the study area.
