ABSTRACT

This study investigated teachers’ professional development and students’ academic performance in public secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised that guided the study; What is the level of teachers’ Professional development in public senior secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State? What is the level of students’ academic performance in public senior secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State? Is there a relationship between teachers’ Professional development and students’ academic performance in public senior secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State? Is there a significant difference in the relationship between teachers’ Professional development and students’ academic performance based on school size in public senior secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State?

 The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consists of all teachers’ schools in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size for this study consists of one hundred (100) teachers’ which was selected from the population. Simple random sampling was used to select five (5) schools. The research instrument used for data collection is structured questionnaire and check list and was designed by the researcher titled teachers professional development and students’ academic performance in public secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government area of Edo State.). It was validated by the researchers’ supervisor and two experts.

The findings revealed revealed that there is significant relationship between Teachers Professional Development and students’ academic performance in public senior secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was also shown that there is no significant difference between teachers’ professional development and student’s academic performance based on in public senior secondary school in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State based on school location.
