PRODUCTION OF HETEROGENOUS CATALYST FOR THE TREATMENT OF WASTEWATER FROM TEXTILE INDUSTRIES

ABSTRACT

Industrial wastewater is one of the important pollution sources in the pollution of the water environment. During the last century a huge amount of industrial wastewater was discharged into rivers, lakes and coastal areas. This resulted in serious pollution problems in the water environment and caused negative effects to the eco-system and human’s life.

There are many types of industrial wastewater based on different industries and contaminants; each sector produces its own particular combination of pollutants. Like the various characteristics of industrial wastewater, the treatment of industrial wastewater must be designed specifically for the particular type of effluent produced.

The aim of this study is to undergo the production of photocatalyst for the treatment of wastewater from textile industries which was carried by undergoing a review on textile industry and how the wastewater is generated, evaluating current water management practices at textile industries and presenting suitable water management actions to enhance the wastewater cleansing process (through the use of photocatalyst).

The following methods were adopted in carrying out the experimental research; Catalyst Support Preparation; Doping of Catalyst, Doping of the PSA using thermal shock method, Characterization of Catalyst, Preparation of dye solution, Photocatalytic degradation, Modelling and Optimization. From the analysis we found out that the maximum removal efficiency obtained was 17.832%. The optimized levels of the factors obtained are time of 82.54(min), catalyst dosage of 7.01(g/l) and dye concentration of 60.35(mg/l).

Photocatalytic purification process using Cobalt Nitrate Hexahydrate (CNH) active catalyst offers to overcome all these drawbacks by reducing the complex colour components in the wastewater into simple compounds like carbon dioxide, ammonia and water in a cleaner and safer way compared to the conventional methods. An efficient removal treatment method such as CNHphotocatalysis presents an important option for the degradation of a wide range of chemical compounds in water.
