ABSTRACT

Classroom management and control entails planning, supervising, controlling and coordinating the activities of pupils in the teaching and learning processes. Classroom management and control are the term used by teachers to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by some pupils. The term also implies that the prevention of disruptive behavior, is possibly the most difficult aspect of teaching for many teachers. Classroom management is a complex set of articulate behavior which the teacher uses to establish and maintain conditions to enable learners achieve instructional objectives efficiently. This study was carried out to investigate the problems of classroom management and control in public secondary schools within OVIA NORTH EAST local government of Edo State. The study encompasses five randomly selected public school with a sample size of 117 teachers. Questionnaires were designed to take responses from the teachers. The result obtained showed that majority of the teachers strongly agreed and accepted that the questionnaire items raised are major problems of classroom management. The result also indicated that overcrowded classroom is a major problem in managing classroom as it recorded the highest mean rating of 4.44. Also, teachers lack of sufficient knowledge on classroom subject and poor communication is a major factor that can result to poor classroom management as it recorded a mean rating of 4.16. The study concluded that overcrowded classroom is a major factor responsible for poor classroom management and control.
