ABSTRACT

The effective teaching of Chemistry in secondary schools is a critical foundation for scientific development, and Nigeria, like many countries, faces significant challenges in this endeavour. This study explores Problems Hindering the Effective Teaching of Chemistry in Secondary Schools in Ovia North L.G.A Of Edo State Nigeria. To address this, a survey design was employed, targeting Senior Secondary 3 students from 28 public schools. A total of 150 students were selected through cluster sampling from five public senior secondary schools. The research instrument, a structured questionnaire, was administered to gather data, and findings were analysed using simple ranking and descriptive statistics. The problems identified include the negative attitudes of students toward Chemistry, a shortage of qualified teachers, the use of complex scientific vocabulary in teaching, inadequate learning environments and resources, the lack of modern laboratory apparatus, and inconsistencies in government policies. Traditional lecture methods were found to be insufficient in engaging students effectively. The findings underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to enhance Chemistry education, including teacher training, improving the learning environment, addressing resource shortages, and adopting innovative teaching methods. This study serves as a call to action to overcome these obstacles and ensure a stronger scientific foundation for Nigeria's future. By addressing these challenges, secondary school Chemistry education in Ovia North L.G.A of Edo State can be significantly improved, providing students with a better understanding of this vital subject.
