ABSTRACT

  This study was conducted to find out the problems affecting the effective study of English Language in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Benin City, Edo state. The purpose of the study is to identify the problems affecting the effective teaching and learning of English Language in secondary schools using Ovia North East Local Government Area as case study.

 The research design of the study was descriptive survey design. The population of the study involve students in the senior secondary schools. One hundred(100)students were sampled in four selected schools. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaires. The validity and reliability of the instrument were tested.

The findings show that effective teaching and learning of English Language in our secondary schools are affected by incompetent teachers, inadequate instructional materials,mother tongue interference, inadequate learning environment and the family background of students.

Based on the findings some recommendations were made thus employment of English Language teachers should be based on qualifications and merit so as to make it possible for only those who studied the course to be appointed, the use of teaching aid while teaching, the provision of incentive to teachers and also parents should be physically and financially involved in providing help to the school.
