PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED WITH REVENUE GENERATION

ABSTRACT

This research work is carried out to study the problems and prospects of revenue generations in local governments, a case study of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The problem of revenue generation has no doubt been a major problem that is being faced by local governments in Nigeria and this has seriously hindered developments at the grass root level as local government has made little impact on the lives of the people in their area. One hundred persons were selected using the random sampling techniques. Both primary and secondary sources of data collection were used to get relevant information; also questionnaires were administered in other to realize the objectives of the projects. Simple percentage was used to analyze the date gotten from the field. Chi-square and correlation was used in testing the assumption. A close analysis of the result of the information and data collected showed some useful findings which includes that local government councils in Nigeria have not been able to meet up to expectation due to poor and irregular funding of local government councils. Some recommendations such as search for honest and credible leaderships (without honest and transparent leaders being put in place, embezzlement of public funds is likely to continue to thrive unabated in local government. Audit alarm should be given its proper place in local government settings. This study was made to resolve the issue of poor revenue generation by local government.
