ABSTRACT
Intimate partner violence, commonly referred to as domestic violence involves violence or abuse by one person against another in a familial or intimate relationship, thus the term“intimate partner violence. ”It includes such acts as those which are inflicted or caused by acurrentor former intimate partner. Intimate partner violence is a hydra-headed problem in Nigeria just as it is in many parts of Africa and of course by extension across the globe. Though men are also at the receiving end, women are often the victims of intimate partner violence. Thus the study zeros in on violence against women. There is a deep-seated cultural belief in Nigeria that it is socially acceptable to hit a woman. In many African countries, as in most third world countries, women suffer intimate partner violence based on their gender. Unfortunately, like most of these climes, Nigeria is in undated with lack of thorough enforcement mechanisms that deter and provide effective protections against intimate partner violence.
