Abstract
This research project is titled Problems of Associated with the Teaching of History in Senior Secondary Schools in Ikpoba Okha LGA of Edo State. The major aim of this study is to find out the problems affecting the teaching process of History as a subject. As a consequent of above, the review of related literatures was done to provide a good basis for the conclusion of this work. Similarly, the descriptive survey research design was employed and to ensure the attainment of the general aim, six (6) research questions were raised and the questionnaire which was tested and validated was adopted as the instrument for data collection. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency count.
The findings of this study revealed that there are qualified History teachers in these schools although these teachers don't often update themselves in by attending seminars and workshops. It was revealed that students now have no interest in studying History as a subject and would rather sit in a Government class. This is further compounded by parents discouragement. Also, the lack of textbooks is a major deterrent and schools are not even doing enough in this regard. Another challenge revealed was the bulkiness of the History syllabus which makes it difficult for students to excel academically. However, this study made a number of recommendations to address these problems among which is the review of the History curriculum. This is important to make the curriculum cover novel happenings and not same archaic content. This study also recommended that teachers of History be more innovate and creative in their teaching, not relying on the old lecture method of teaching. Rather, they should give students opportunity to make discoveries on their own and this will help enhance their interest in the subject.
