ABSTRACT

This work is on the Problems and Prospect of African Union from 2002 to 2014, with a focus on the evolution of African Union following transformation from Organization of African Unity (OAU). The objectives and challenges faced by the Africa Union was also examined as a way if finding the best solution in the resolution. This research work discussed the role of peace keeping flayed by the African Union in various African countries disputes and other functions of the AU. This study was carried out using a synthesis of various textual materials including primary and secondary sources. It was early observed that the prospect of the African Union is high based on the re-organization that took place in 2002. With this re-organization, it became easier for African countries to cooperate for peace and stability in the region. Better regional cooperation and consolidation of peaceful governance will likely form the charter of the union in decades to come. The works also shows that the breakthroughs of the early 1990s and first decade of the 21st Century came about in part because of leadership and a ‘concert approach’ to African diplomacy, the lack of co-operation and co-ordination amongst African states at the current juncture, and the sense of fragmentation amongst them, means that the African Agenda is in jeopardy and the continent is both neglected and being undermined from abroad. The Nigerian and the South African presidents, who were both elected in 1999, came to the OAU table with plans for regional integration, better governance and development, as platforms from which to project their statesman.
