PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACT

The objective of this research work was to find out the problems and prospects of teaching English Language in Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The descriptive research design was used for this research work. Four research questions were drawn up to guide this study. Questionnaire was designed and analysed for data collection. A total of one hundred and thirty three (133) respondents were used for the study. The simple percentage was used for analysing data obtained from the study. After carrying out the research, the research found that the teaching and learning of English Language in Secondary Schools in Ovia North East has a lot of problems which include Lack of qualified English teachers in those schools, Lack of language laboratories in the schools, Inadequate use of teaching materials and methods, Lack of conducive environment for learning, Lack of incentive and lack instructional material or teaching resources etc. Therefore, teachers should improve on their use of instructional materials and Government should focus on funding more language programmes.
