PROBLEMS AND PROSPECT OF ACCOUNTING IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate the problems and prospect of Accounting in Secondary Schools in Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated. The study made use of descriptive survey design. The total population of the study consists of 6,802 students in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state. The sample size for this study consists of 100 students in senior secondary school in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. This was selected using a proportionate sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire and it was subjected to face validity by the researcher supervisor, and one other experts in the department of Vocational and Technical Education. The reliability of the instrument was determined using 20 Business Education students who were not part of the study population. The alpha value obtained was 0.71 which show the instrument was reliable. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and two sample independent t-test. The mean and standard deviation were used to answer the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the teaching method used in teaching Financial Accounting, in public secondary schools. To find out areas where students have problem in studying Accounting and there is no significant difference between male and female accounting students in senior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. Conclusion were drawn and some recommendations were made which include that Government should also ensure that infrastructural facilities such as classroom facilities are provided to help the teaching and learning exercise and accounting teachers should be appointed to head such programme to ensure that the programme needs are provided.
