ABSTRACT
This study was designed to examine the problems and prospects of teaching English Language in selected Secondary schools in Emevor Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State. To guide the study, four research questions were raised.
The design of the study was a survey research design. The application was made up of 85 English teachers. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 50 teacher from secondary schools in Emevor, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State. The research instruments used in gathering data was the questionnaire, which were administered to teachers. The instrument was validated by the research supervisor. Percentages was used to analyze the research questions.
The findings reveals that home background of students in secondary schools in Emevor, Isoko South Local Government area influence the teaching of English Language in the Local Government. It was also revealed that teacher’s method of teaching contribute to student’s retention and learning of English Language. It was found out that the use of instructional material by teachers improved the learning of English Language. Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended among others that English language teachers should be given in-service training by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEP) and also equip them with the necessary instructional materials to help them teach the subject effectively.
