PROBING SMARTPHONE FOR ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES A CASE STUDY OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at probing smartphone phone for academic activities among undergraduate students with a view to investigate their attitudes, behavior and perception towards academic or nonacademic related activities. In so doing, it discussed smartphones as a mobile device technology ranging from HTC, Tecno, Infinix, Samsung, to Iphones. To probe its utilization by students, the survey approach was adopted and a total 120 survey questionnaire was administered and retrieved from a sample population within the University of Benin. The data gathered was presented and analyzed using descriptive analysis which involves the description of variables under study in details and thereafter results were discussed. Findings revealed that most students utilized their smartphones for activities ranging from browsing and reading relevant materials on websites, recording lectures, keeping track of their academic calendar, searching for information, using productivity tools and communicating with peers; it also revealed that majority (83%) of the respondents strongly agreed that smartphones facilitates quick access to a variety of resources and applications while they promote independent learning as well as socializing when online. It was adduced that they are also a distraction on academic activities and can be time consuming. Finally, it was gathered that academic related activities were more of what students utilized their smartphones for with about 75% agreeing on a weekly basis.
