ABSTRACT
Ideas and principles for the development and betterment of the society and human conditions have remained man's project in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. Hence the call for a humanistic approach to existence as a viable alternative for development culminates the theories propounded by scholars. Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s ‘Ujamaa’ enunciates restructuring of Africa; the outcome of which would call for inter-connections of persons, equity and justice, collectivity of labour and even distribution of the proceeds for the betterment of the people and society. The idea of humanism in Africa is being rebranded by certain existential predicaments in human life conditions hence it's characteristics such as generosity, communalism and a profound respect for human life are gradually redefined. This study examines the concept, characteristics and principles of ‘Ujamaa’ in Nyerere’s Arusha as an instrument for contemporary African humanism. With the critical analysis method, this work argues for the revitalization of African humanism through careful study and applications of the principles of ‘Ujamaa’ and concludes that these humanistic principles are instrumental for contemporary African stability.
